Quicksand in Iraq ... (updated)
June 2003. The more you struggle, the deeper you sink. How could the administration not have forseen that the American occupying forces in Iraq would become a target of angry Iraqis and radical jihadists from all over the region? And be unable to leave so long as the situation worsens? It's a formula for the West Bank-isation of Iraq... was the administration in denial over this likelihood? Or are they in fact looking for this fight too? (..."Bring them on!")
This administration seems to think that the 'most powerful country on earth' need not bother with friends and allies, diplomacy, the United Nations, world court and other multinational frameworks, not to mention careful long term strategic thinking; all this is replaced with sheer attitude, backed with bombs. And at home, A.G. John "No Apologies" Ashcroft seems bent on turning America into a police state; and the rest of the Bush crew on delivering their wealthy backers and corporate sponsors a privileged position in a new society whose motto, suggested by a recent headline in Harper's, might be "Get Rich or Get Out!". Below we've posted excerpts and links to discussions of the big issues in play now which will likely continue to drive events throughout the summer.
